Mazatlan Moments: Plaza Machado

An important part of your vacation in Mazatlan should be to visit the culturally rich Plaza Machado, perhaps the most beautiful area of Mazatlan. This area provides an authentic experience that will entice all of your senses. Of all the areas in Mazatlán, this seems to possess the greatest charm with its fine dining, sidewalk vendors and colonial buildings lining the street.

The 20-block historical area around the Plaza has been beautifully restored. It provides a delightful stroll with its eclectic restaurants, cafes and boutiques. The center of this area is known as the the mercado or "market," which is an inviting and bustling area filled with shoppers, artists and musicians. Visitors have described the area as:

"The architecture looked like the French Quarter in New Orleans-- with the elaborate railings and ornate facades. We hit Olas Altas Street right at the Café Marisimo, an excellent breakfast spot."

The restaurants are known for their amazing authentic food and outdoor seating. Near the mercado you will find a beautiful Moorish Style cathedral. The cathedral, which dates back to1875, has been kept in pristine condition. A good piece of advice is to dress appropriately, you will not be allowed inside if you wear shorts or appear too casual.

Just south of the cathedral is the Parque Revolution. The area is perfect if you would like to take some time to sit and relax. This park overlooks Mazatlán's City Hall and the famed Angela Peralta Theater on the south end.

Mazatlán's most prized architectural jewel is the Angela Peralta Theater. Beautifully restored, the theater was originally built in the 1860's and has a long and colorful history. The theater was once a famous opera house, and now the architectural delight is still open for tours during the day.

The area also includes the renowned town aquarium, called Acuario Mazatlan. It holds around 200 species of fish and a fun sea lion show which make this attraction a must see for families.

Make sure to provide enough time to wonder through this delightful area and its flea markets. With so much worth while spots you're sure to enjoy yourself!
