Surfing in Mazatlan

Mazatlan's golden beaches are perfect for relaxing, but they're also great for surfing. Find the right places and you could be riding the waves in some of the best conditions in Mexico. Mazatlan has several locations for surfing, but the most popular areas are in the Cerritos area, about 10 minutes north of the Golden Zone. Playa Bruja is a quiet beach with great waves that reach heights of 8-10 feet. Surfboard and equipment rentals are easily accessible and if you don't like crowds, Playa Bruja is your best bet. Playa Los Pinos is another excellent choice for surfing in Mazatlan. The beach is located between the Mazatlan Marine House and the Fisherman's Monument. It is great for intermediate surfers. Here, you can surf the waves and enjoy fresh fish sold by Mazatlan fishermen. For a spot that is a favorite of locals and surfers alike, visit Playa Olas Altas, which means "high-wave beach". If you're looking for a different experience, take a quick boat trip further south and spend some time at Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island), the perfect place for getting away from the crowds. Located at the southern end of the city, it's only 5 minutes by ferry to get to the island. The ferry operates every day until 5pm. The island's beach stretches on for 10km, and there is horseback riding available, as well as many great restaurants. For expert surfers, seek out Escollera on Stone Island, considered a superior wave in the surfing community. Even if you don't want to surf, Stone Island is perfect for laying in a hammock, drinking out of a coconut and suntanning. Interested in taking surf lessons? Visit mazatlansurfcenter.com. They offer two hours of instruction, transportation to and from your hotel and the beach and all the equipment. A reservation is necessary for all lessons and the cost is $65 USD per person. East Pacific Surf Camp is another great company for surf lessons and equipment. They offer two-day board rentals for $50 USD and lessons starting at $65 USD.
