Mexico Fishing Tournaments

Summer may be ending, but it's just the beginning of some excellent opportunities for sport fishing. The fall season marks the start of a series of annual fishing tournaments in Mazatlan, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. For those of you who have always wanted to enter a fishing tournament, what better place to do it than Mexico? Sound fishy? (haha) Well we've compiled a list of the major tournaments and all the info so you're in the know before you go!

Mazatlan

14th Annual Billfish Tournament In Mazatlán, the prestigious 14th Annual Billfish Tournament will promise to be another exciting competition highlighted by outstanding hospitality. The tournament, hosted by Marina El Cid., opens on November 12. A $5,000 entry fee per team will apply, with each team consisting of up to five anglers. The Billfish Classic has two divisions: Billfish and Gamefish, and will take place on November 13th, 14th & 15th. Prize Categories: Billfish Division: Minimum Weights - Marlin: 225 lbs, Swordfish: 150 lbs
  • 1st place team wins 40% of total entry fees
Miscellaneous Gamefish Division: Minimum weight - over 25 pounds
  • 1st place team wins 5% of total entry fees
The Billfish Tournament also offers Optional Daily Jackpots with entry fees of $250, $500, $1000 and $2000 per day. For more information on this and other prizes visit http://www.igtournaments.com/mazatlan.htm The Torneo Internacional by Marina Mazatlan The Torneo Internacional is actually a beginning of summer tournament held in early June (this year's was June 4th 2008) at Marina Mazatlan. In the evneing there is a sponsored welcome mixer for all contestants and skippers. The entry fee is $5,000 pesos. As a side note: only Cash, Visa or Mastercard are accepted for payment. 2008 Prize Categories: Pex Vela Division:
  • 1st place team: Trophy bronze sculpture and 2008 Nissan Platin
Marlin Division:
  • 1st place team: Trophy bronze sculpture and 2008 Nissan Tsuru
Dorado Division:
  • 1st place team: Boat Lowe 12 feet with a 6 hp Johnson engine, Certificate of Inscription for the XXXIV International Championship of Pez Vela, Dorado, Marlin and Atún in Barra de Navidad Jalisco
Atun Division:
  • 1st place team: Boat Lowe 12 feet, Certificate for Inscription for the XXXIV International Championship of Pez Vela, Dorado, Marlin and Atún in Barra de Navidad Jalisco

Los Cabos

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament takes place from October 14-18, 2008. This tournament's base-entry fee is $5,000. Teams registered by September 19, 2008, will be in the early registration competition and have a chance to win an Iridium hand held satellite communications systems provided by Mackay Communications. The first two early registered teams to release an eligible billfish will go home with a unit. Prize Categories: Los Cabos Team Division: Forty percent of the entry fees go to the top three team-point leaders. One point is scored per pound over the minimum weights for blue, black and striped marlin (sailfish do not count):
  • Furuno First Place team: 25 percent
  • Largest marlin: 25 percent
  • Melton Biggest Blue Marlin: 10 percent
  • Sea Recovery Biggest Black Marlin: 10 percent
  • Cabo Chips Biggest Striped Marlin: 5 percent

Puerto Vallarta

The Bisbee's Off-shore Ujena Jam Tournament This tournament just passed, but it's a big one so it's worth mentioning. At least this way you'll be super prepared for next years fierce competition! The Bisbee's Off-shore Ujena Jam Tournament took place on August 27th to 29th, 2008 in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. This "Offshore Jam" is a conservation minded, all-release billfish tournament with additional categories for dorado and tuna. It takes place in conjunction with the biggest swimwear model competition in the world. Bisbee's, the producers of the world's richest fishing tournament, teamed up in 2008 with the Ujena Swimwear Manufacturers to present this tournament. Prizes:
  • $20,000 for cash prizes: $10,000 for full release Marlin, $5,000 for biggest Tuna, and $5,000 for biggest Dorado
