Pueblo Bonito Turtle Protection and Release Program

It is almost that time of year again when hundreds of turtle hatchlings will make their way from the beaches of Cabo San Lucas to the sea. As many of our Cabo guests and owners who are familiar with Cabo know, the beaches in Los Cabos are important nesting grounds for four endangered species of sea turtles: Loggerhead, Black, Leatherback and Olive Ridley. Year after year, these species of turtles return to the destination in June and July to lay their eggs on the beaches along the Sea of Cortez. Unfortunately, the eggs and hatchlings are easy prey for natural predators and humans, and these gentle reptiles need all the assistance they can get in order to reach maturity and increase their numbers.

Pueblo Bonito Resorts has made it an important part of the company's mission to take part in ecological conservation efforts, and one of these efforts is our Turtle Protection and Release program. Pueblo Bonito believes in educating its visitors and neighbors about the importance of conservation, and the Turtle Release program provides a fun and interesting way to highlight this importance.

Every year, our team observes the adult female turtles as they return to the Cabo nesting grounds. The locations of nests are recorded and then once the female turtles return to sea, the nests are protected. Fences and structures are erected to protect the nests from birds, animals and humans alike until the turtles hatch, usually during late September through mid-December.

For guests and owners visiting during these months, Pueblo Bonito offers the opportunity to assist the conservation team as they the release the hatchlings from the protected nests. Guests and owners enjoy hands-on participation during a truly rewarding experience, one that creates wonderful memories as well as photo ops!

Because there is no way to know exactly when the turtles will hatch, there is no set schedule for the releases. When the eggs in a nest begin to hatch, the director of the ecological program will notify the resorts, and then the event is organized to allow those who are interested to participate. The release is scheduled for just before sunset on that same day, and the newly hatched turtles are set free on the beach in front of Pueblo Bonito Pacifica.

Guests and owners staying at any of the Pueblo Bonito properties in Cabo San Lucas may take part. If you will be visiting Cabo during the turtle release season and would like to participate, please check with the Concierge Desk at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort for details: conciergesunset@pueblobonito.com.mx The satisfaction of aiding an endangered species is an experience you won't want to miss!
