Mexico for One: How to Have an Amazing Solo Adventure

Traveling alone to Mexico? In resort destinations (like Los Cabos) or in colonial cities (like San Miguel de Allende), a solo trip can be very rewarding. Learn a few Spanish phrases in advance, observe basic safety precautions, and Mexico is yours for the asking.

Here are two options for solo travelers, especially women seeking self-expression and authentic experiences.

Los Cabos. The most glamorous getaway in Latin America kisses the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Claiming the place where the desert meets the sea, Cabo offers ideal weather plus first-class spas, dining, and lodging. For natural beauty, relaxation, and adventure, it’s the place to go.

In Cabo San Lucas, which established its reputation as a deep-sea fishing mecca back in the 1950’s, an all-inclusive hotel is the best choice. Tops in this category is Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos Beach Resort, a white-washed beachfront property with blue accents affectionately known as Pueblo Bonito Blanco. The restaurants are good, the vibe is chill, and it’s easy to meet people in the resort’s pools and bars. Foodies can walk from the hotel to the adjacent Pueblo Bonito Rosé, a sister property, to enjoy fine Italian cuisine at Fellini’s.

Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos sits directly on Medano Beach, a two-mile crescent of soft sand lapped by calm waters. It’s a perfect place for a carefree swim. Feeling adventurous?  Rent a paddle board or a kayak and head out to El Arco, the iconic sea arch at Land’s End. While it pulsates with activity during the day, Medano Beach is peaceful at sunrise and sunset.

Downtown Cabo San Lucas, known for its local markets, is a short stroll from Blanco. The Marina, home to water craft of every description, is ringed by restaurants, bars, and Puerto Paraiso, a shopping mall. Prefer to catch a ride back to the hotel? Ubers are plentiful and inexpensive.

Additional suggested activities in Los Cabos:

  • Themed tours:  Food, shopping, sunset cruise, or water sports tours (snorkeling or scuba diving) are great ways to explore and connect.
  • Whale-watching expedition: Visiting between mid-December and March? Book a whale-watching tour to see majestic humpback and gray whales.
  • Hiking: Craving exercise? Hike to the summit of Cerro del Vigia (Lookout Mountain), which offers fantastic views of the city and ocean below.

San Miguel de Allende. The recent debut of Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende, a stylish European Plan (EP) hotel a short walk from a magical colonial city in Mexico’s central highlands, gives solo travelers another superb option. This is especially true for those seeking personal renewal and exciting discoveries.

The hotel’s Aromatika Spa, a sanctuary of wellness, offers a wide range of treatments and wine-based therapies designed to restore physical, mental, and spiritual balance.

San Miguel de Allende, its cobblestone streets leading to art galleries, charming cafes and artisan shops, is a great place to behold the visual splendor of Spanish Baroque architecture—and encounter the unexpected.

Pueblo Bonito Vantage has curated a series of experiences designed to enhance each guest’s visit. Here’s a sampler:

  • Art Tour Through hidden Galleries. Gain access to the hidden world of local art in San Miguel—meet artists, observe their creative processes, see one-of-a-kind pieces.
  • Equestrian Experience with Picnic. Ride through beautiful landscapes along bridle paths in the semi-desert of northern Guanajuato. At trail’s end, a gourmet picnic awaits, featuring wine, local delicacies and dreamlike views.
  • Sanctuary of Atotonilco. This 18th-century church, renowned as Mexico’s Sistine Chapel, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site defined by its connection to the independence struggle. Priceless paintings are displayed in the church and side-chapel.
