Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende an Ideal Base for Vendimias
A vendimia is a grape harvest festival, and in the environs of San Miguel de Allende, it is one of the highlights of the colonial city’s late summer season, inviting visitors to tour vineyards and taste wines.
The recently opened Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende hotel, already renowned for its elevated hospitality, fine dining and panoramic views of the city’s landmarks, is a perfect base from which to explore the region’s leading wineries.
The stylish new European Plan (EP) hotel gives guests easy access to the city’s celebrated rooftop restaurants, art galleries, trendy boutiques and cultural landmarks, while also providing convenient access to the surrounding wine country. The hotel is designed for travelers who want to pair the city’s energy with the more leisurely rhythm of vineyard tours and harvest-season traditions.
The pastoral area around San Miguel in the state of Guanajuato has evolved into a thriving wine region in recent years. Local vineyards (see below) celebrate the harvest with wine-related festivities from late August through early October.
These celebrations often include the traditional pisado de uvas (grape stomping), where guests roll up their pants and crush grapes barefoot in big wooden vats. There are also wine tastings, cellar visits, live music and outdoor meals that pair local wines with regional cuisine.
Some vendimias feature a symbolic blessing of the harvest, a custom carried over from the Spanish winemaking tradition, which dates to the 16th century.
Winemaking in Mexico began with the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s, who brought vines from Europe and established “New Spain” as the oldest wine-growing region in the Americas. Although indigenous grapes were grown before the Spanish conquest, the Spaniards found the rootstock from home did very well in the semi-dry, Mediterranean-like climate.
While the Guadalupe Valley in Baja California Norte deserves its reputation as a top wine producer, Mexico’s northern, high-altitude regions have begun to distinguish themselves as first-class wine districts, Guanajuato among them. Situated at an altitude of just under 2,000 meters and flanked by rugged mountains, San Miguel de Allende’s outlying regions have good terroir (soil).
Based on the average temperature and amount of rainfall, the region is best suited for the cultivation of Syrah, Malbec, Tempranillo, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon varietals. Though whites and rosés are produced, medium-bodied, fruit-forward reds are the most popular wines. The vineyards themselves, many of them set among lavender fields and olive groves, are very picturesque.
Since 2000, Guanajuato has seen a huge boom in wine production. Currently, there are more than 15 wineries in the vicinity of San Miguel de Allende, with many more under development. Dynamic new winemakers and established vintners alike are rediscovering the rhythm of the land, reviving centuries-old traditions--and winning medals at prestigious wine competitions.
