San Miguel de Allende: What Is A UNESCO World Heritage Site?
How does Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende, the stylish new urban hotel on the doorstep of a fabled colonial settlement, complement the city with its eclectic menu of experiences?
First some background. In 2008, San Miguel de Allende was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the ‘historical city’ category based on its "outstanding universal value" to humanity.
Often described as a “jewel frozen in time” due to its remarkable 16th-century Spanish Colonial Baroque architecture, San Miguel de Allende was established in 1542 to protect the silver trade route. The fortified town reached its peak in the 18th century, when many of its exceptional religious and civic buildings were built. These well-preserved edifices give the city its colonial authenticity and cultural integrity.
According to UNESCO, “some of these buildings are masterpieces of the style that evolved in the transition from Baroque to neoclassical.” In addition, San Miguel de Allende served as a melting pot where Spaniards, Creoles and Amerindians exchanged cultural influences. In the early 1800s, the city was of vital importance in the quest for freedom during the Mexican War of Independence.
The UNESCO historic district in San Miguel de Allende encompasses 64 blocks and includes homes, mansions, public squares and churches such as La Parroquia, a 17th-century cathedral famed for its soaring neo-Gothic design. The preservation of the district’s charming ambiance and architectural heritage is the result of longstanding efforts by city officials to limit development and maintain strict building codes.
There’s more. Situated 14 km from town, the UNESCO-designated Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, dating from the 18th century, is one of the finest examples of Baroque art and architecture in New Spain (the original name for Mexico). It consists of a large church and several smaller chapels, all decorated with frescoes, sculptures, inscriptions and Mexican Baroque oil paintings depicting a series of events that emulate the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.
While the Sanctuary is a prime example of the exchange between European and Latin American cultures, its architecture and interior décor reflect the influence of Saint Ignacio de Loyola, who founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (a.k.a. the Jesuits) in 1541.
Only 15 minutes from the hotel, the Sanctuary is a must-visit for those who appreciate religious devotional art. The hotel concierge can arrange transportation.
