Viñedo San Miguel: A Top-Class Winery Near Pueblo Bonito Vantage
While the Guadelupe Valley east of Ensenada in Baja California Norte is Mexico’s largest wine-producing region, it is not alone.
Guanajuato, with its claim to fame being the mesmerizing colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, is quietly the country’s fourth-largest and fastest-growing wine-producing state. Dozens of first-rate wineries fly well under the radar. Most of them cultivate grapes on clay-based soil planted in vines centuries ago by the Spaniards.
A leading example is Viñedo San Miguel. Located 15 minutes from the city and Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende, it is the largest and for many, the finest winery in the state. Embedded into a rich agricultural landscape, the terroir of the land, coupled with the estate’s wine-making expertise, has enabled Viñedo San Miguel to produce a wide variety of award-winning wines since its debut in 2016.
The winery’s 52-hectare land area includes 115,000 vines under cultivation as well as olive groves and fields of fragrant lavender. The region’s dry temperate climate is known for its reliably sunny days and irregular rainfall during the summer months. Cool winters (but no chance of frost) allow the vines to go dormant.
Viñedo San Miguel is a powerhouse that grows 13 grape varietals, including perennial favorites such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, and Chardonnay. Grapes are selectively harvested; vines are manually pruned in the fall. The vineyard is renowned for its rich reds and crisp whites.
The winery has an interesting origin story. Villa Petriolo, an organic agricultural estate in Tuscany that ranks among Italy’s oldest producers, embarked on an expansion venture many years ago. The idea was to seek out the best lands in the New World to establish a vineyard where it could perpetuate its legacy beyond its geographic borders. In the Bajio mountain range of Mexico’s central highlands, Villa Petriolo’s wine pioneers found the ideal altitude, climate, and soil to carry on their heritage.
Tapping over 400 years of tradition and expertise, the vineyards at Viñedo San Miguel use artisanal processes to produce exceptional wines under the guidance of the Cuadra family, known for its chain of high-end leather stores.
“Inside our winery, you can enjoy unique experiences that will lead you to discover the world of wine,” said a company spokesman. These include guided tours of the facilities and specialized tastings to enjoy and learn about each label. It is during these tastings that the magic of Viñedo San Miguel unfolds, providing visitors with a memorable encounter with superb Mexican wines that trace their roots to Italy.
Wine connoisseurs and neophytes alike can explore the winery’s iconic barrel room and tank area, where the winemaking process is described in detail. The vineyards themselves, nestled into a pastoral landscape, are also worth strolling. Special events, weddings and parties are also welcomed on the spacious grounds.
Day visitors have a choice of three wine tastings. The deluxe San Miguel tasting features a sampling of five wines paired with five delicious gourmet snacks prepared by resident chef David Quevedo. The experience concludes with a tasting of Italian olive oil from Villa Petriolo, which brings the journey full circle.
