Best Places for Whale Watching

Dec 16, 2022

Many guests’ visits to Los Cabos tend to be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Here at Pueblo Bonito Golf & Spa Resorts, we’ll do everything we can to make that the case for everyone by encouraging you to try some of our favorite local adventures. Balmy year-round temperatures work in our favor, of course, with every season in Los Cabos boasting satisfyingly warm water and beaches bathed in a romantic, golden sunshine. And if you came for that alone, well, you wouldn’t be the only ones; perhaps our most loyal guests return for that very reason every year. And we’d love to introduce you.

Whales. Grey Whales and Humpback whales “winter” in the warm water of Los Cabos between the months of December and April. We can’t explain how the largest mammal on earth can be such a graceful and adept swimmer, but they are, and we’re honored these two species of whales and others migrate 6,000 miles to our balmy climes after having summered in Alaska and British Columbia. Winter in the Sea of Cortez is whale watching season and not because you might happen to catch a glimpse of a whale; there are so many that seeing one breach the water is practically guaranteed. Fabulous tour company operators will take you to known “hot spots” but, if you book more than one trip out into the water, you’re sure to increase your chances! Then again, you can also see the whales from our magical coastline. This month we’re excited to share more than a few hot spots of our own for your shoreline whale watching pleasure.

Drink in the premier guest experience at our Whale Wathcing VIP Lounge in the Towers at Pacifica. In the property’s third building, accessed through a sky bridge, the Whale Watching VIP Lounge is open exclusively to guests of The Towers at Pacifica and offers one-of-a-kind culinary experiences and handcrafted cocktails in a dramatic oceanfront setting. If it wasn’t enough that the majority of Towers guests enjoy the privilege of expansive, unobstructed ocean views right from their rooms, the VIP lounge affords them unparalleled drink service with a view. Guests’ reviews reveal words can’t do the experience justice, but try anyway: “We were blown away by a full bar and food from morning to night, gorgeous outdoor patio with comfy lounge chairs, and amazing view of whales in the morning.”

Quivira Golf Club offers the best beachfront location of any golf course in Los Cabos, providing spectacular ocean views from every hole. Conceived as an exclusive amenity for Quivira owners and guests of Pueblo Bonito Golf & Spa Resorts, the course features a world-class Jack Nicklaus Signature design with dazzling views and breathtaking drops from the tee to the fairway. And so, it would be quite natural to spot a whale breaching a swelling Sea of Cortez. But that’s not our point; you don’t have to swing a club to spot a whale. All you have to do is visit the Steakhouse at Quivira. Indoor and outdoor seating during the evening hours overwhelmed guests with panoramic ocean views. Sit and sip long enough, and you’re sure to see a whale or two swim by. (As one guest remarked, “We never guessed whale watching would be part of the all-inclusive package experience!”

Return from the Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Quivira to your luxury villa at Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, an exclusive vacation and residential development in Cabo San Lucas. Whether on a family vacation or entertaining guests in any of the property’s luxurious three-bedroom villas, embrace the stunning landscapes and panoramic ocean views. Each villa features a private infinity pool, indoor and outdoor hot tub, maid and butler service, and unlimited access to the restaurants, bars, and facilities at three nearby Pueblo Bonito resorts: Sunset Beach, Rosé, and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos. But to carry the theme, you don’t need to swim any deeper than Montecristo’s own pool to see the whales. In guests’ own words:

“We loved having our master bedroom on the top floor…with its formal dining room, large kitchen, and super balcony with table and chairs, grill, and hot jacuzzi. We could watch the whales from the balcony while we ate our meals."

“We had a great stay in this beautiful home with fantastic views of the ocean. In the infinity pool every day we were watching the whales jumping and playing… one of the best vacations we ever had."

This summer, we learned Conde Nast Traveler’s readers had named Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort among the world’s best resorts in Western Mexico. An internationally acclaimed family-friendly property terraced along a coastal bluff high above the beach and sea, the elite Los Cabos property welcomes guests to an oasis of lush gardens and stylish accommodations. The beautifully appointed suites at Sunset Beach, situated within hacienda-style villas, offer deluxe accommodations and ocean views from every room. In fact, travel and dining publication, The Gate, collated hundreds of thousands of TripAdvisor reviews to determine which hotels have the best views in the world, and Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort won.

“...Pristine beaches underline epic views of the Pacific Ocean. ‘We were able to watch whales playing off the shore near the resort,’ boasts one reviewer, ‘and the flowers and trees are beautiful, especially the hibiscus!"

Indeed, whether stepping out onto your terrace to savor your morning coffee or lingering over a chilled bottle of wine at sunset at the Lobby Bar, the view from our idyllic bluff above the beach is practically worth the trip in itself. But there’s more; so much more! The resort’s extensive list of amenities includes a gym with an oceanfront view, exclusive access to the resort’s award-winning Armonia Spa, and an infinity pool where you can watch the whales, too. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world when you gaze over the Sky Pool at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach and catch the reflection of the limitless sky across the placid water of the two-tiered infinity pool perched 250 feet above sea level. Considered one of the most renowned places to celebrate life milestones, our VIP Sky Pool Upper Terrace boasts an unparalleled backdrop that overlooks the desert, mountains, and deep azure sea.

Cap the evening, any evening, by sinking into a comfortable seat at Sunset’s Lobby Bar. Order an espresso, specialty martini, or tropical cocktail and sip along to the sea breeze dancing through the windows from the ocean lapping the shoreline down below. The Lobby Bar’s open-air terrace offers the perfect platform to watch the sunset or search the horizon for—you guessed it—migrating whales. Its stunning views can’t be beat.

So come one, come all to see the whales. This is a view to be shared, and we look forward to sharing it with you. Reserve your room-with-a-view today.
