Whale Watching in Los Cabos: Plan Your Pueblo Bonito Stay Before the Season Begins
The countdown has begun! Whale watching season in Los Cabos opens in mid-December and runs through mid-April, so now is the perfect time to start planning your stay. Guests who book now get the best choice of suites and dates for one of the greatest natural events on the Baja peninsula.
Every year, humpback whales travel roughly 6,000 miles from the cold waters of the north to the warm Pacific off Cabo San Lucas, where they socialize, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Up to eight species pass through, and the humpbacks are the stars. These massive whales, which can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, are known for putting on spectacular displays: slapping the water with their long pectoral fins, lifting their broad tails above the surface before a deep dive, and, most dramatically, launching their entire bodies out of the water in a breathtaking breach. The best time to see whales in Cabo is January and February, when sightings peak as mothers arrive to give birth in the sheltered water. Mornings and late afternoons tend to bring the calmest seas.
The best part is that you do not have to board a boat to see them. Across our Los Cabos resorts, ocean-view suites, poolside terraces, restaurants, and bars offer a front-row seat to the migration, and many guests catch their first spout of the day over breakfast or a sunset cocktail. Early mornings are especially rewarding, when the water is calm and a spout is easy to spot against the glassy surface. Sightings are never guaranteed, which is part of the fun, so settle into a lounge chair and keep your eyes on the horizon.
When you want a closer look, guided whale-watching tours depart from the Cabo San Lucas marina through local operators such as Cabo Adventures and other trusted tour providers. Options range from small, eco-friendly boats to luxury yacht outings, and some include hydrophones so you can listen to the whales sing. Our concierge team will be happy to recommend an excursion and assist with making arrangements directly with the tour provider. Mexico regulates whale watching to protect the animals, so every tour keeps a respectful distance, and the whales decide how close to come. Dolphins often play alongside them, which makes the morning even better.
Whale season overlaps with some of the busiest weeks of the year in Los Cabos, and January and February fill up fast. Booking in October lets you choose your suite, your view, and your dates before everyone else does. Pack light layers for the boat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a camera with a good zoom, then leave some time to sit and simply watch the water.
