Los Cabos: Mexico’s Fastest Growing (and Safest) Destination
Recently interviewed for the IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) News Channel, Rodrigo Esponda, director general of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, noted that visitor arrivals by October 2020 had already reached 80% of those from 2019. Against all odds, this gap is expected to narrow further by the end of the year.
With oceans on three sides of the Baja peninsula, access to the destination is limited to air, which has enabled Los Cabos to implement protocols that have largely kept COVID-19 under control. Esponda noted that there are now fewer active COVID-19 cases in Los Cabos than there were when the destination was shut down earlier in the year.
Pueblo Bonito Resorts has instituted its own CARE Pledge. CARE translates to Conscientious Service, Advanced Standards, Rigorous Sanitation, Elevated Hygiene.
The luxury resort collection has established safety and sanitary protocols for all operational areas—from arrival at the international airport in Los Cabos, to the front entrances of the resorts; in rooms, at the pools, spa and fitness areas, Quivira Golf Club and in the restaurants.
All guest luggage is sanitized upon arrival, and guests enter a sanitation cabin and receive temperature checks with an infrared digital thermometer. Mobile pre-check-in is available and social distancing protocols are in force in all public areas, including pools and restaurants. A full set of guidelines may be found here.
Los Cabos is also benefiting from new flight routes, including from New York, as airlines look for appealing destinations to get their aircraft off the ground. Private aviation is up an incredible 75% year-over-year. Esponda related the fact that during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the main airport had to park planes on its second runway.
To its credit, the private sector has embraced the challenge to implement appropriate safety restrictions. Visitor safety has been enhanced by the fact that hotels, restaurants and most tourism outlets have restricted their capacities to accommodate social distancing protocols. Group activities are limited to 10 people. Because golf is a safe ‘social distancing’ sport, Cabo’s golf courses are operating as normal with strict hygienic protocols in place.
There is no quarantine requirement upon arrival in Los Cabos. Instead, the destination has implemented a massive PCR testing program within the tourism industry in order to identify and isolate individual cases. In addition, the destination continues to prioritize health and safety standards.
At the conclusion of his interview, Esponda shared an interesting golf tidbit. In 2019, 3% of the destination’s 2.8 million visitors stated that they travelled to Los Cabos primarily to play golf. Because golf is (rightfully) perceived as a safe activity, and because Cabo’s courses are world-class, that number has doubled to 6% in 2020.
For Los Cabos, an exclusive Land’s End destination, the increase in golfer arrivals goes hand in hand with an increase in visitor affluence. Expect the trend to continue into 2021, especially once a coronavirus vaccine is approved and distributed.
