Los Cabos: The Ultimate Winter Getaway

Oct 15, 2021

Search far and wide, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better or more beautiful place in the sun than Los Cabos, Mexico.

Situated at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, this Land’s End getaway offers the whole enchilada on a silver platter. From November through late spring, the destination boasts a dry desert climate with low humidity and cool ocean breezes. Brilliant blue skies and a beaming sun? Check. Technicolor sunsets? Like clockwork.

Led by fabulous beachfront hotels, including the collection of Pueblo Bonito Golf & Spa Resorts, Los Cabos has established itself as a beacon for travelers in search of an exceptional vacation experience. Cabo has it all: a fantastic array of al fresco restaurants (from elegant to casual), pampering spas and a plethora of land and sea activities. Best of all, improved air connectivity has put Los Cabos within easy reach of most major North American gateways.

Winter getaways are all about the beach. Nineteen Los Cabos beaches fly the iconic Blue Flag, one of the world’s most acclaimed eco-certifications awarded to beaches recognized by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Beaches must meet and maintain stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria. When you see a Blue Flag in Los Cabos, you know the beach is clean and accessible, has excellent water quality, is recycling-friendly, and protects marine life and ecosystems.

For a wide range of recreational pursuits, few destinations can match Los Cabos. For example, Los Cabos is an unparalleled sport fishing capital--more big-game fish are caught here than anywhere else in the world.  Blue and black marlin season runs from June through December. Striped marlin are plentiful year-round. Tuna, dorado, wahoo, and roosterfish are among the prized species that swim in Cabo’s nutrient-rich waters.

Another fact: Los Cabos boasts a unique mountain-desert-ocean environment where the game’s top designers have crafted some of the world’s best golf courses. Only here do verdant green fairways drop from cactus-studded foothills to golden beaches and the deep blue sea. Heading the list of Cabo’s finest courses is Quivira Golf Club, a jaw-dropping, gravity-defying marvel by Jack Nicklaus that tiptoes along sheer granite cliffs and meanders through massive windswept dunes.

Water sports? In addition to snorkeling, parasailing, surfing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and swimming, Los Cabos has the best scuba diving on Mexico’s west coast. The world’s only sand falls are found 90 feet below Pelican Rock at El Arco, the iconic sea arch at Land’s End. These unique underwater sand accretions were discovered by the French explorer Jacques Cousteau, who described the Sea of Cortes as “the aquarium of the world.”

Eco-Adventures? The whale watching season in Los Cabos (December through March) marks the arrival of hundreds of whales that migrate south from the Arctic Ocean to the warm, calm waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula to birth and rear their calves. The main attraction are the humpback whales, which spout close to shore and thrust themselves out of the water in breathtaking leaps. Whale-watching excursions are available from the Cabo San Lucas marina.

Landlubbers are not overlooked. They can enjoy guided desert hikes, outback camel safaris, beach horseback riding, desert jeep tours, ATV excursions, mountain biking, rock climbing and bird watching.

Finally, there’s safety. At press time, the state of Baja California Sur (including Los Cabos) was promoted to Green (low risk) on Mexico’s COVID-19 Traffic Light Monitoring System. Los Cabos continues to prioritize health and safety standards as part of its “Los Cabos with Care – A Safer Way to Get Away” effort.

The ultimate winter getaway? It’s Los Cabos, no close second.
